Counting your stock with Jholok
A guide for first-time users
How to use Jholok, why it works the way it does, and the shop and accounting ideas behind it, in plain words.
Welcome
For everyone
Jholok helps a jewellery shop know what it has. It keeps a list of your products, records every piece that comes in or goes out, and helps you count what is really on the shelves, so you can see what is missing before it costs you.
This guide is for anyone using Jholok for the first time: the shop’s owner, the people who approve counts, and the staff who count. You don’t need to know anything about accounting. Each idea is explained the first time it appears, and every word is in the Glossary.
How this guide is arranged
- The ideas behind the app explains stock, the ledger and counting in plain words. Read this part first, even if you only count.
- Everyday use sets the shop up and keeps the catalogue and stock up to date.
- Counting walks through a count, from opening it to counting boxes of pieces.
- Checking a count is for the owner and the people who approve counts.
- Looking after your shop covers backups and privacy, and ends with stories from a shop’s year.
Each chapter says who it is for, starts with what you’ll learn and ends with what to remember. Words that may be new are linked to the Glossary the first time they appear.
Where to start
- If you count stock, read 1 Stock basics to 3 Counting and checking against the ledger, then the chapters on counting.
- If you approve counts, read those too, then the chapters on checking a count.
- If you own the shop, read the guide in order.
The shop in this guide
Every example and picture uses the same made-up shop, Jholok Jewellers, with its owner Bidisha and staff Sita, Ramesh and Meena. It is the same shop that the app’s demo shows, so what you read here matches what you see on the screen. None of its stock is real.
The pictures
The screenshots are of the app on an iPhone, showing the demo shop. Your own screens show your shop, so the names and numbers will differ, but the screens are the same.
The pictures of boxes of jewellery are drawn examples that the app uses for practice, not photos of a real shop’s boxes. Counting boxes from a photo is new, and how well it works on real boxes hasn’t been measured yet; the chapters on box counting say what that means for you.
Which app this guide describes
This is guide 0.1, for Jholok 0.1. The What changed page lists what is new in each edition of the guide.
